ABC Hires New Executive to Lead Canadian Office

TORONTO (July 15, 2009)—The Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) has named Joan Brehl its new vice president/general manager, brand leadership and innovation of its Canadian services.

Brehl will play an expansive role leading ABC’s Canadian operations. Her focus includes implementation of marketing and sales strategies that promote the ABC Canada brand, developing new strategic business opportunities in print, digital, mobile and other media channels, and forging relationships with Canada’s leading publishers, media buyers, and industry influencers. Brehl will also serve as the staff liaison for the newly formed ABC Canada Board Committee and its advisory committees—the Canadian Newspaper Advisory Committee and the Canadian Print Advertising Buyers Committee.

“I am pleased to welcome Joan to ABC’s leadership team,” said Mike Lavery, ABC’s president and managing director. “Her depth of experience and knowledge of publishing and advertising are a boon to ABC and its members. I look forward to the impact her skills and strategic vision will bring to our Canadian operations as we focus on innovating and evolving to meet the needs of our members.”

Brehl will attend the first meeting of the ABC Canada Board Committee on Thursday, July 16, in Toronto, as well as the North American board of directors meeting in Chicago on July 22 – 24, before officially joining ABC’s executive team on August 4.

Brehl’s background includes experience in both publishing and advertising, making her uniquely qualified to lead ABC’s Canadian operations. She spent 18 years in executive management of Time Canada's Publishing Group, most recently serving as its publishing director in charge of Time’s Canadian organization. She spent several years in the advertising agency business, working at Harrison Young Pesonen & Newell (now PHD). Brehl began her career in editorial at Chatelaine Magazine and Today Magazine.

Brehl graduated with honours in the Canadian Advertising Agency Practitioner (CAAP) course from the Institute of Communication Agencies (ICA) and holds a Bachelor of Business Management from Ryerson University. In addition to her professional work experience and education, Brehl is an active member of the publishing and advertising communities, with service on the boards of the Print Measurement Bureau and the National Advertising Benevolent Society.

Brehl’s appointment is the latest step in a broad set of strategic changes ABC has made in recent months to better address the unique needs of the Canadian market. The organization has broadened its Canadian representation and organizational structure, increased Canadian control over rules and reporting, and implemented improvements to its audit approach that are intended to help contain costs, streamline audits, and address the evolving nature of today’s media marketplace.
